White Wine at the Blue Hour, Some thoughts about full frame cameras

FinePix X100 (23mm, f/5.6, 1/60 sec, ISO200)

After two days in Dubrovnik we are back in our hotel in Podstrana. This was our favorite hotel during our whole trip and that is why we returned for another couple of nights. The hotel has very nice rooms but the best is that breakfast, dinner or drinks are served outside close to the sea. Behind the whine glasses you can see palm trees, the beach and the setting sun.

After dinner we had our daily walk at the beach. There are no white sand beaches just gravel stone so it’s a little tiresome to walk but nothing beats a sunset by the sea.

All images taken with the Fuji X100. This camera has really grown on me within the last year. It’s dynamic range, the colors, the rendition and the low noise are impressive. This is easily as good as my Canon 5D if not better. But I love full frame since I took my first image with my 5D. With the Sony RX1 announced I think there is hope to see a full frame version of the X100 or the X1Pro sooner or later. Continue reading

The Missed Opportunity – Second Thoughts about the upcoming Sony RX1

When I saw first leaked images of the Sony RX1 a couple of days ago I was amazed. Finally somebody did it. To put a large sensor in a compact camera. To me it was no surprise that Sony did it first. Either Sony or Fuji would be first I guessed. They both have fresh ideas and they both do not need to protect their DSLR business.

First I need to say something about my Fuji X100. I have it for more than a year now and still every time I shoot with it I enjoy the feeling. I love the simple body, the dials, the optical viewfinder and the completely silent operation of this camera. There is a japanese expression for “pursuit of perfection” but I forgot how it goes. Anyway the Fuji X100 is exactly that. It makes you smile when you use it.

I’m curious if the Sony RX1 will be the same. I think Sony did a great job by putting a full frame sensor in a compact camera. They took a lot of ideas from Fuji like the leave shutter in the lens, the function button or the exposure compensation dial but they made missed out an opportunity and here is why: Continue reading

Take it easy!

FinePix X100 (23mm, f/2.8, 1/60 sec, ISO250)

This years vacation was the first time since I started to travel in 1989 that I did not bring a SLR or DSLR for a trip that takes longer than 7 days. Why? Because it was the only way to find out if I would miss something by totally relying on my Fuji X100 and Sony NEX 5. Kind of real world experiment. Did I miss something? Well read on. NEXt bring us some lenses please! ( NEX part III )

You already guessed it: To me the Sony NEX cameras are the best mirrorless cameras today. They pack the best sensors in super small, very well made bodies. What more can you ask for? Well, how about some lenses? Sony introduced NEX in 2010. When the NEX 6 will be announced next week it will be NEX camera number 8! They have less lenses available today! Continue reading

What’s NEXT? – A NEX 6! ( NEX part II )

Well what are my wishes to Sony? On my old website I wrote that they should give me a high quality 24mm lens ( 35mm ) and I would be in heaven. Well they did but they also made it very high price so I got the 23mm lens from Fuji with a X100 camera attached for free for practically the same price.
.
But since my wishing works so well here they are: Continue reading
