NEXt bring us some lenses please! ( NEX part III )

You already guessed it: To me the Sony NEX cameras are the best mirrorless cameras today. They pack the best sensors in super small, very well made bodies. What more can you ask for? Well, how about some lenses? Sony introduced NEX in 2010. When the NEX 6 will be announced next week it will be NEX camera number 8! They have less lenses available today!

Beside the two kit lenses ( 16, 18-55 ) I only got a cheap, manual SLR magic lens. The 24mm Zeiss is very expensive and I think it is far too big. I would prefer a pancake style lens like the one that Canon has announced with their EOS M. Before my next vacation I will get either the 18-200 or the 55-200 to cover tele but what I also want is a wide angle zoom. There is a rather pricey 4/10-18 that will be announced next week but if the quality is good and if it isn’t a heavy monster I will get this lens.

I’m not attracted to the m43 system for various reasons but what is really impressive is their selection of lenses . Sony needs to put more effort into lenses if they want to attract and keep enthusiasts. If somebody is invested in lenses he will most likely not switch systems. As long as you have only one or two kit lenses you free to decide for another brand when updating. Sony has to get their customers invested in the system to avoid that they will jump ship if the big two finally wake up and bring out attractive cameras and systems too.

Maybe the Canon EOS M is a first wakeup call. Don’t get me wrong, I’m not impressed by the EOS M but I think it was a smart move to put an APS-C sensor in the camera instead of the 1 inch that is in the Nikon 1. I wouldn’t be surprised if Nikon brings out an APS-C based mirrorless system too in the near future.
