Evening Walk on Empty Streets

After a short rest we went out to get dinner but decided to have a walk first.

Kanazawa so far was quite different to Kyoto and Osaka. Kanazawa is not empty, there are still many tourists but compared to Kyoto and Osaka it’s very relaxed. So despite the much colder weather it was a good idea to come here.

The images were taken right before dinner, close to rush hour but streets were rather empty. I waited for the man with the briefcase to enter my shot behind the translucent curtain but I gave up the wait for another person to walk through the massive intersection underground. I was not happy with the image because the lady with the long coat is barely visible. But this is not Shinjuku so the image above is all I have got.

But back on the surface I found this police station that kind of reminded me on my favourite novel: “The Third Policeman” by Flann O’Brien. I have to read it again.

The image below the police station shot shows how we stood in line in front of the red light. Which reminded me on the “baby elephant distance” thing we followed during Covid 19. Seems that private space is highly regarded in Kanazawa so we kept our distance too.

We walked to the train station for supplies but I also wanted to see the wooden gate at night. The gate looks truly impressive and it is massive. Hard to photograph though with a wide angle lens. The first shot shows the whole gare but of course the people in the foreground are too tall because of perspective distortion. The second one gives a better impression of its size but it suffers from distortion. You can still see that it is beautiful but of course it’s best experienced in person.

Luckily the tourist information was already closed. Otherwise my wife would have insisted to check it out. I took a final image of the Sumo display in their window and we moved on to finally get dinner. The restaurant was located in the train station and it was excellent and excellent value. I think my wife had something based on tofu but I had a fantastic rice bowl with snow crab and cold soba.

Japan is food heaven for me. Not so much for my wife but she still loves Japan. Back to our hotel.
