I just realized that the Sony RX100 got a little too much space on my blog lately. The main reason is convenience. This camera is so small that it is almost like traveling without a camera and that’s why it is so perfect for business trips. A business trip is a business trip after all.

The most important factor in traveling photography is: Luck! I have been to Moscow a couple of times before in the winter but it was always too warm thanks to global warming. I think I have said that already. But it fits as this post is the second part of “Blue Hour At The Red Square” I posted about two weeks ago. It was the third night in Moscow. St. Valentin’s day. Will I become a JPEG shooter? I don’t think so. I just like the idea to have a file that I can change years after I took the image without any loss of data but I have to admit that the JPEG from my X100 is extremely impressive. This is especially true for the Velvia setting. The images just get the punch and boost in colors they need. The effect is not overly aggressive but it really makes a lot of difference to the original RAW file. Continue reading

I have visited Moscow a couple of times but thanks to global warming it took till last February to have some really cold weather. Finally I would get the chance to see the Red Square covered with snow. Not on the first evening though. The day my plan arrived it was -33 degrees Celsius in the morning. It was close to the end of a cold wave coming from Siberia. The massive drop in temperature covered almost all of Europe. People died in Poland and in the Ukraine.
Canon EOS 5D (35mm, f/2, 1/2000 sec, ISO100)
I have to admit that I was shocked twice when Sony announced the RX1. The first shock was a very positive one. Finally a really compact full frame camera with a fixed lens. And the fixed lens is a Zeiss 35mm/f2.0 with T* coating. Just perfect! The second shock came within a minute and it wasn’t a positive one. No viewfinder. NO VIEWFINDER!
I can imagine that there was a rather emotional discussion within the Sony marketing department. Obviously the small is everything group won. Continue reading
