Grapefruit Moon

DSC03405

“Grapefruit Moon, one star shining, shining down on me.”

Sometimes the moon looks just perfect. When I drove home the full moon was big and clear so I took my longest lens, the Canon EF 70-200/2.8 II IS, plus the 1.4 converter and combined it with my Sony A6000 (crop and 24MP so lots of pixel on the subject) and put it all on my old and massive Gitzo tripod.

I took a couple of shots and converted them into black and white. Of course a longer lens would have been helpful but I’m still surprised about the result. It is a heavy crop though. I guess a 600mm lens on a crop body is needed to fill the frame with the moon or a telescope of course.

It’s more tricky to get a good shot of the milky way. I tried a couple of weeks ago but I failed. There is way too much light pollution where I live. Vienna is close and there is no chance to get a real dark sky. I missed the chance to take a shot of the milky way when I was in the deserts of the US. Maybe next time.
