I Still Haven’t Found What I’m Looking For

The title is misleading. Joshua tree is a great place. It’s just because I’m addicted to use song, film or book titles for my head lines.

Joshua tree NP is a must see not only for fans of the rock band U2. We went there after check in late afternoon coming from Kingman. We decided to stay in 29 Palms to have enough time to experience the park.

We were tired but it was a good decision to go out again. The light can be tricky in May. Most of the time is is too harsh and flat except early morning and very late afternoon. Not the best situation if you are traveling and want to take beautiful landscape pictures at the same time.

The next thing is the sky. Of course you can’t expect rain or storm clouds in the desert on a regular base. That’s why it is a desert! Flat light, no clouds – say hello to boring shots! The good thing is that the Joshua trees are spectacular enough to compensate. And as I took the images in between 4 to 6pm ( incl. the images of the my next post ) the light wasn’t that ugly anymore.

I love the desert. I love its quietness. It’s quieter than the highlands because there is neither sheep nor sea. Sometimes it’s so quiet that you can hear your own heartbeat. It’s magical.

The Canon 6D is magical too. A great little camera. Small and unassuming on the outside but very powerful. It’s a dream for travel photographers. Of course I know mirror less cameras are smaller. I use them and I love them too but sometimes a full frame DSLR is just better.

The big sensor, the big lens choice, the wonderful viewfinder. And I’m not even talking about dynamic range, tones and high ISO. In most of my travel photos high ISO is not important. Like in these samples. There is enough light. High dynamic range isn’t a big deal either if you shoot in good light. It’s too much dynamic range for my liking most of the time. I prefer punchier pictures and deeper blacks. That’s where VSCO film 4 comes into play. A great way to get good looking files fast.
