Some days are like ice cream.
The last couple of days of our vacation in 2023. We are back in our favourite town on the coast: Carpinteria. Just South of Santa Barbara this little coast town has it all. A beautiful beach, sea birds and seals and businesses with a lot of retro vibe.
I started the day with peanut butter and jelly but it quickly improved during lunch time where we managed to find a small Japan inspired restaurant in a rather quiet shopping centre in Santa Barbara.

My wife had the Salmon Teriyaki and had a really nice eel. So far only iPhone images in this blog post but I learned that the iPhone is really perfect for that. Just look at the Teriyaki sauce on the picture above. That really looks perfect.
Another cloudless day in Southern California, good food and ice cream. Looks like the perfect place but there are clouds in the paradise. Very dark ones. It seems that Covid had a big impact on the businesses in Santa Barbara. What was once a very lively town with lots of nice shops and restaurants looks kind of deserted. Very similar to what we saw in Santa Monica and to what we also see in parts of Austria now. I think Covid had an impact as it has changed how we all purchase stuff. Online shopping was the only option during shutdowns and we learned to like it. Now a big part of the population shops without pants on and this is the result: empty shopping streets.
I wonder if this will ever revert but I’m not positive. I’m guilty too.

After lunch in Santa Barbara and a banana split on the pier we are back in Carpinteria. We just posted the post cards we wrote while on the pier and now we are back on the beach for another sunset. Most likely we will be back home a couple of days before our cards but better late than never. We love to receive post cards because today there are something special so we also have to write them. It gets more tricky to find post cards and stamps though.
Since my XF 50-140/2.8 OIS stopped working I only had my XF 16-55/2.8 WR. It’s a great lens but of course I would love to also have a longer focal length when on the beach. I’m not a super zoom guy but for those occasions I think the Nikon Z 28-400/4-8 VR would be a very nice lens.

This is our second last day on the beach before we head home. One more day and one more night in Carpinteria and one day in Los Angeles before we fly back. It’s the end of September but it feels like summer. We need to soak in the sun and energy in participation of a winter which is close at least back at home.
But we are still here and this was a day like ice cream.
