Yes I know it’s a little too late but to compensate for that the images are taken in the most important pilgrim site in Austria.
Every winter we make a day trip here. Not for religious reasons, the reason we come to the town of Mariazell is less profound: We come here to see blue skies and sun. In December and January we are often plagued with high fog. It means that in lower altitudes everything is grey while in the mountains the weather is great.
So we come to this little town in the mountains to see the sun. As you can tell from the pictures this time we weren’t lucky.

It was still very nice and we bought some gifts for Christmas for our friends. There was plenty of snow and it was cold. After a short walk we went for lunch and after that we visited the church. And we lit candles at the nearby grotto. The grotto was built to get the candles out of the church because their grime hurt the art works.
Officially photography is not allowed in this church but I think it’s from a time where cameras were loud and had to rely on flash indoors. My camera is as quiet as a mouse and it doesn’t have a flash so I didn’t disturb the pilgrims at all. I still acted quickly and stowed away my camera after a took the images.

I’m always impressed how quiet those old churches are. Even if there are dozens of people inside you could hear a needle drop. People are quiet and if they talk to each other they whisper. There is only one other place that comes to my mind where you can experience that: on a train ride in Japan. I like that a lot.
It’s a little too late to wish you a Merry Christmas but it’s not too late to wish you a Happy New Year. May your wishes and dreams come true.
