More Than This

On one on my long bike rides I discovered art where I at least expected it. Close to where I live and somehow in the middle of nowhere.

The first mural I discovered was the gigantic “country folk in Egelsee. I looked it up on the internet and later went there again by car and with my camera gear to find them all. In order to keep things simple I only took my small camera bag and took all images with either the XF 35/1.4 R or the XF 23/2 WR.

Those paintings are really awesome and they are impressive in size too. Look at below image which is called “Gedeckter Tisch” (laid table). “If you have more than you need don’t build a wall, build a bigger table.”. The tractor in the picture gives you idea of the size.

Most of those paintings are massive and they all use otherwise unused space. They enhance windowless walls and silos. If you take a closer look on the image above you can see my car on the far left which gives you an indication of the size of my favourite painting: country folk.

In total there are 13 big paintings spread over the community of Würmla in Lower Austria that consists of super small villages like Egelsee, Gumperding, Mittermoos, Anzing, Diendorf, Holzleiten, Jetzing, Pöding, Waltendorf and Grub. I have never heard of those places even though I live rather close. But thanks to the young artist those villages will now be visited. When I took the picture of the laid table there was also a young couple that visited the place at the same time.

Beside every painting there is a small sign which contains a statement from the family who provided the “canvas” and the inspiration for the artist. It’s written in German but also in English. A sign that they really looked beyond the borders of their world for this project.

Now I frequently pass by most of those paintings when I ride my road bike. I have a couple of favourite rides and those pairings lay on my new favourite flat ride. Where I live there is not a single section of flat road. The road goes up and down all the time. That’s great of course but sometimes I prefer to take it easy. This is where this new route is perfect and it’s plastered with art.

This blog post is not meant to give you a detailed description of every single painting. You could google “Würmlas Wände” or simple come here and see the paintings yourself. If one of those paintings would be located in San Francisco or Seoul they would be Instagram hot spots and you would have to wait in line to get a clean shot. Here, in the middle of nowhere, you can enjoy them all by yourself.

Most of the time I didn’t see any people at all when I took those pictures even though I took some of them on a weekend. One reason is that it was extremely hot, the other one that those are really quiet places. Just perfect!

“Sometimes you win in life, sometimes you lose. It is what it is.”. That’s life and that’s wisdom on a wall. There is nothing to add to that.

PS: If you live nearby you have to see it and if you visit Austria you should consider to visit this place too. It’s not too far from Vienna. Great art and a beautiful landscape. Highly recommended!
