Of Fish and Cameras

I love fish and seafood so naturally I’m attracted to those markets. Some are fancy and clean, some are a little more down to earth. The one in Busan falls into the later category.

This is not exactly what I expected. I considered Korea (South Korea!) to be a high tech country. And in some cases it is. It’s home to Samsung, LG, Hyundai and also some advanced hifi companies focused on high end streaming, so of course Korea is very advanced. But even in Seoul you can find places that look more like Vietnam and I like that. It’s like Hong Kong where modern and traditional coexist.

I took those images a long time ago. Summer 2019, before the pandemic. And even though I started to write this blog post I never finished it. I understand that some of those images could be disturbing. I like those raw places even though they are hard to stomach. I will come back to that later in this blog post.

We just had a short lunch break and so we quickly walked through the fish market. I was together with a colleague from Germany who isn’t very fond of fish so to grab some food here was not an option. And even though I love fish I also was not tempted to eat here. It was extremely hot and we were wearing suits so we needed to eat in an air conditioned restaurant. But even if I would be in casual clothes I most likely would not have eaten here. Heat and fish is a poor combination. But the variety was amazing. There was something for everyone.

There was an amazing selection of seaweed which looked really tasty. I love the seaweed salad that a Japanese restaurant chain in Vienna has on their menu. They just mix various seaweeds with a lemon and chilly.

But next to the seaweed stand I found this. Something that looked like eels that were skinned alive. They were still moving and there was a water bottle with ice to keep them fresh. I’m not a vegan, not even a vegetarian but I never can forget this image. It just looked cruel. I had eel in a Japanese restaurant where the eels were swimming in a tank and minutes later they were on my plate. Chopped and fried. I saw the chef when he took out the eels, chopped their heads off and put them in the pan. I had no problem with that because I think before the eels realised what was going on they were gone. Most likely faster and less stressful than most cows or pigs that we eat.

I saw a couple of documentaries on Netflix lately. About what we do to the fish and to our oceans and what we do to our life stock. Above I stated that I’m not a vegetarian but meanwhile I’m slowly getting there. If we can’t say for sure that the animals that we eat are treated with respect we should not it them or at least eat less of them for a start. That’s what I started this year. Meat and fish only once, maybe twice a week. I’m not “religious” about it but my body feels good and I think this might also be the most efficient way to save our planet.

Even though I had my camera bag with me I took all images with the XF 23/2 WR. So I could have taken them with my Fuji X100F instead. But I always preferred the bigger X-Pro camera body. Meanwhile I sold my X100F. Today I either take a camera bag with me or I rely on my iPhone so there is no room for a “compact” camera anymore.

Will I take only my iPhone to business trips or even to vacations? I don’t think so. I just love to shoot with a real camera. I love the whole experience. The viewfinder, the shutter sound, the different lenses. My iPhone would give me very similar results most of the time but it can’t give me that experience and that’s why I have to bring my camera.
