To get lunch in the old town of Kyoto proofed to be more difficult than expected so we had to eat a painting.
We ran around only to find out that most restaurants in this area only open for dinner. We just started our trip in Japan so we were not willing to settle for pizza or burger. Finally we found a sushi restaurant that offered a bento box for lunch.
What we got was exactly what was on display in front of the restaurant and it looked incredible. Almost too good to eat it.

There was a small starter (on the blue plate), soup and a sushi set that consists of 16 different small square sushi in a square wooden box. I think it is true that we also eat with our eyes. This just looked amazing and most important it was really good too.
It was funny that the waitress apologised that they can offer only this meal for lunch. It was obvious why. Her husband was already preparing for dinner. I guess both started early to prepare the lunch boxes and now switched to preparation for the evening. The restaurant was nice and cosy like so many restaurants in Japan. A small bar counter where the people could eat sushi and have a drink and a couple of tables upstairs. At first we were the only guest but soon others arrived.
The service was really nice too and with an attention to detail that is also portrayed in those “lunch-boxes”.

On the way out I took a couple if pictures to show you how small those little restaurants are. Note the narrow staircase to the second floor or the limited space behind the bar stools. It really helps that Japan has the lowest obesity rate in the world.
After lunch we continued sightseeing in Kyoto but that’s stuff for another blog post.
