Down to the Waterline

From desert to coast. From Palm Desert to Ventura with our hotel located right next to the marina.

Back at the sea. We love the various landscapes in the USA. The deserts, the mountains, the spectacular National Parks. But what we love most is the coast. Probably because this is one of the few things Austria lacks. We need to get abroad to see the sea and the only sea within driving distance is the Adriatic. Which is beautiful but of course no match to the Pacific ocean.

I found a hotel in Ventura right beside the marina. It’s another Holiday Inn Express. I chain we really like because you can have breakfast there. That’s usually not the case with in the USA because you could simply have breakfast elsewhere but we really prefer to have it in our hotel because that way we don’t have to leave our hotel first thing in the morning.

Compared to our last hotel this one is rather old but the view from the balcony easily compensates for that. After we settled in and rested we went for dinner. And because there is a beautiful walkway to the harbour we walked to the restaurant passing by small sailboats and later trawlers.

We went to a Greek restaurant right next to the harbour. I think the owners have been in the USA for a long time so the dishes have been adapted over time. But it was great to sit in an outdoor area eating, drinking while watching the sunset. Our vacation gets into its final week. We started in LA two weeks ago and we will fly back home from LA in less than a week. We always have this strange mixed feelings. On one hand we look forward to see our friends again but on the other hand we would love to stay a little longer.

We love to come here in autumn because it simply prolongs the summer for us. But when we will be back home it will be October 1st. It’s usually still rather nice in October but the days are short and winter is close. So we have to make the best of the remaining days here and soak in sun, sea and beach.

Even here in sunny California the evenings get cooler. In the morning I bought a new fleece from Patagonia at their original shop in Ventura. But it’s a R1 Air so right now the cool evening wind blows right through it. Originally I wanted to buy a replacement for my beloved Patagonia R3 which I still use and which still looks good after 20 years. But there is none. So I got the R1 instead which is great but only as a mid layer. Hope it will last as long.

Nothing lasts forever but we have still a couple of days before this vacation is over.
