Of course it is September but that’s still summer in the South West of the USA. Especially in Phoenix, Arizona and that’s where we are headed.
But this time we took a detour through Sedona. I quickly learned that Sedona is all about mountain biking and hiking. But still suffering from a cold I was not prepared to either hike or bike so sightseeing by car it was and we found a worthy subject beside the breathtaking nature: The Chapel of the Holy Cross.

Built in the 1950 this little chapel still looks fresh. The location is strange though. Kind of right in the middle of nowhere. The Bishop of LA is to blame for that. He thought that this the design is too radical and modern. Well I think it looks great and it perfectly fits into the landscape. Even the footpath looks great.
It’s not a place where you can spend hours but I definitely recommend to go there is you are in the area. While amazing landscape is abundant in the South West fine architecture is rare.

After a long ride we finally reached Scottsdale, AZ and decided to have a stop at the local Bass Pro Shop. A favourite of ours since the very first trip in the USA. This one seems a little smaller than the ones we have visited so far but it is still gigantic by European standards.
In a Bass Pro Shop you can practically buy everything from clothes to camping to fishing gear and boats and of course guns, guns, guns.

We usually come her for outdoor clothing though my favourite in that regarding is REI and for the stuffed animals. You have to be very lucky to spot a cougar in the wild so this shop might be the best option to see one up close. Or elk, or bear of bison and in the bigger shops you can see groups of hunting lions, fighting moose or a giraffe bull.
In case you are allergic to guns you should avoid the second floor altogether. Their selection on rifles, pistols or crossbows is impressive and of course there are rows of ammo too. And of course there is a lot of magazines dealing with all kind of guns. I seems guns are even more popular than cars and trucks.

The last image I took when we went out of the restaurant after an early dinner. I took the image to record the temperature. 35 degrees Celsius at 6pm and at the end of September shows that we finally arrived in Phoenix, AZ.
The good thing is that my cold immediately vanished in the heat and that we would not have to freeze anymore until the end of our trip.
