Bigger is Better

Vessel, Hudson Yards. One of the new brand new things in New York. A sculpture in front of a shopping centre. Doesn’t sound like much but it’s still impressive. Size matters!

When it comes to art I honestly believe the size matters. But that’s hardly a new thing. The pyramids, the cathedrals, skyscrapers. The main feature those things have in common is that they are huge. That’s what makes than impressive and that’s their main attraction. Just imagine one of those old cathedrals but with only at one tenth of its size. It would be pointless. Bigger is Better!

Of course I’m not comparing this object with the pyramids or with cathedrals. The Vessel is nothing more than a couple of connected stairs but its size makes it really stand out and hard to photograph. The best picture I took from it is from inside the shopping centre. From the elevated standpoint I managed to cover the whole object and its surroundings.

Talking of size. I asked myself how my fellow citizen from Austria managed to write on that wall at a height of over 3 meters.

Regarding photography I kept it simple. One camera one lens and even though I shot with a zoom lens almost all shots were taken at 10mm or very close to it. From my many business trips to Asia and India I know that I love to shoot wide. The XF 14/2.8R is my favourite lens from Fuji but 10mm is still a completely different thing. That is really wide and frankly most of the time it is too wide but sometimes it really works. Like in my picture of the new World Trace Center station at the beginning of our trip almost 3 weeks ago and now for the shot of the Vessel from inside of the shopping centre. Just look how tiny the people are in that shot. It really gives a good impression of the scale of this object.

The XF 10-24/4 OIS was always a landscape lens for me but it also really works for architecture.

The shopping centre was nothing special but we had a very good lunch among office workers before we headed to our next location: The High Line.
