Flat Iron Building in Flat Light

Since our hotel was located right in the middle in between the Grand Central Station and the iconic Flat Iron building this was the next destination.

Of course I didn’t expect to make a breathtaking image since the light was very poor but I didn’t expect that it is so hard to get a nice picture of this building either. And it didn’t help that it was partly covered by a scaffold.

First of all this is a tall building which of course always is tricky and second it is surrounded by other buildings so that you can’t really shoot it from a distance. But as mentioned already I didn’t expect to make that one in a million image here today.

That goes to Michelle Palazzo who shot the Flat Iron building during a snow storm. One truly impressive image and a good example of being at the right place at the right time. But even then it takes a real genius to take such an image of course. A real masterpiece.

The light was flat and I was not inspired so i’m glad that I was smart enough to take most of the shots with the XF 50/2.0 WR instead of the XF 10-24/4 OIS. The compression just works better with this subject.

My wife went to the hotel instead of joining me on my walk to the Flat Iron building so I had to take a picture of the Instagram couple instead. She posed in front of the building fancy dressed and with perfect make up. After the shooting they both went straight to their smartphones so I assumed they immediately posted the pictures on a social network. You can probably tell by the way I write about it that this is still not my life. I use what’s app and  meanwhile I managed to be in some groups with friends.

A little later I rejoined with my wife and we took the subway for the first time. This is the only picture that I took and the only thing I can say is that it was an unpleasant experience. I traveled to many places and I used subways around the world but this is easily the worst. There is the horrible smell of human extractions of all kind, it is dark and it is loud. This is the perfect place for a post-apocalyptical movie but I really feel sorry for the people who have no choice but to use this for their daily commute.

New York is an amazing city, “the capital of the free world”, I think it deserves a less disgusting public transport.
