Small Is Beautiful

There is some real beauty in small things. As I’m growing older that’s especially true for camera equipment.

Of course I’m still not ready to dumb my camera gear and shoot everything with my iPhone but I’m also not willing to lug around a Pro FF DSLRs plus a 70-200/2.8 to shoot squirrels. Or California ground squirrels to be more precise.

The point is that today you can get very close to what you get from the serious gear with a much smaller camera and lens. The closer you get to your subject the more likely the depth of field of a 70-200/2.8 shot wide open on a full frame will be too shallow anyway so most likely you need to stop down to f4 or even f5.6 to increase DOF. Or you even need a converter because you can’t get close enough without having the little critter running towards you to beg for food. Wildlife photography in the USA!

If you look at the fellow below you can clearly see that he has been quite successful in getting free food. At the end the nice people who feed them just feed the hawks because there is no doubt that this little fatty will have some issues to be back in his hole in the ground fast enough.

But as you can see in the last shots those squirrels have become like spoilt kids and can they can be quite persistent.
