Young But Beautiful!

Yesterday I visited the Votiv Kirche in Vienna for the very first time! That’s very strange because:

  1. it is my favorite church in Vienna ( because it looks absolutely beautiful )
  2. I lived very close for more than 10 years
  3. my dentist is located right behind it

I don’t no why I never went inside. When I visited my dentist last time I wanted to go inside but it was closed. This time I had more luck.

It was a bright, sunny and warm autumn day but inside it was dark and rather cool. My eyes needed a couple of seconds to adjust. The first image is taken at F2.0 and 2500ASA btw. It’s much darker than inside it’s bigger brother the Stephansdom ( or St. Stephens Cathedral ). I should not call it brother. The Stephansdom is much more famous and rightly so. It is not only a lot bigger but most of all it is a lot older too. Some parts of it are almost 1.000 years old. When the south tower ( 134 meter ) was finished in the year 1433 it was the highest tower in Europe for a couple of years.

If you now think that I’m a very literate person I have to disappoint you. I have just googled. But I didn’t want to talk about the Stephansdom here. If you have ever visited Vienna I’m sure you have seen it. But this time it is about the Votivkirche. But there is not much to say except that this church is just about 130 years old! There is a photography on the internet from 1866 when the towers were still unfinished! No wonder it’s not famous. By “cathedral-standards” it’s not even a teenager. So it is: young but beautiful. I would love to stay there longer but during my visit they were retuning the organ and you can trust me that this is not a nice sound. The lower octave tones were impressive. I felt them in my stomach but the higher the tones the more annoying it became. After a couple of minutes I gave up and moved out.

The last shot is the only one I didn’t take with the Fuji X100. I took it with my Nikon D200 more than 6 years ago. The reason why I posted the shot here is because the outdoor shots I did with the X100 don’t show the beauty of this church. Big churches are not easy to photograph because well because they are so big. Best way is to take a long lens and take an image from a certain distance. That’s what I did back than. With the 18-200 zoom at 170mm shot from a distance. NIKON D200 (170mm, f/11, 1/60 sec, ISO100)
