Mono No Aware

White Christmas. I already raved about it here. Well, here is more.

Snow has become seldom where I live. We still get it once every winter for a couple of days but nothing compared to what it used to be. If you want to see snow you need to get to the mountains and they better be high. So no wonder that everybody expect our mail lady is in awe.

Because of the cold temperature the snow covered the trees for a couple of days and I decided to take my camera with me on our daily walks.

On the first walk on the 26th of December I took my Nikon Zf with the Nikon Z 26/2.8 attached. The next day I decided to switch to the Nikon Z 40/2.0. The walks took place right after lunch on both days. As you can see there was not only snow but also sun. Something almost as rare as snow in winter.

Snow and sunshine feels like we are on a ski vacation but we are right home. Wonderful! A true Christmas miracle.

I took all images of this blog post on the same short stretch where the road follows the woods. Houses on one side, snow covered forest on the other. If the conditions are right paradise can close to home. I travel a lot and it makes me appreciate even more that I have the luck to live in such a wonderful place.

I also love the seasons. I can’t imagine to live in a place where there is summer all year round. For some this might sound like paradise but no thanks. Those cold, dark winter days make me enjoy the first days of spring and the first hot summer day.

As mentioned I only took my Nikon Zf and one small prime. To be honest I think it is all I really need. The Nikon Zf and those two small primes would make the perfect ultracompact travel camera setup. That’s close to the full frame equivalent of what I used 10 years ago on my business trips to Asia. Back then it was the Fuji X-T1 plus the Fuji XF14/2.8R and the Fuji XF27/2.8. It is very liberating to travel light. Someday in the future I might be able to take just that on a big vacation.

Now the snow is mostly gone. It is still very cold but there are only patches of snow left in our backyard. Mono no aware. A Japanese term that describes the bittersweet sadness and appreciation for the transient beauty and fleeting nature of life.

I got this translation from AI. Actually it is only a short summary of what AI has to say. It’s easy to see how much more efficient and elegant the Japanese term is.
