An old grand hotel in an old mining town and if that’s not special enough how about an elevation of 2980 meters above sea level.
We are in Silverton, Colorado. Last time we came here for breakfast while staying in Ouray. This trip we decided to stay directly in Silverton in the Grand Imperial Hotel where I managed to get the last parking spot right in front of the entrance. The hotel is old and because of that there is no elevator of course. Just be prepared to do some workout in high elevation. The hotel is really lovely and so was our room.

The hotel is just beautiful and so is the restaurant next door. We arrived just in time to get a little rest and an early dinner. The food was excellent but unfortunately you can’t go for breakfast there. Breakfast is served in a cafe on the other side of the town roughly 100 meters down the road. You already figured that Silverton is a rather quiet and laid back little town. There are hikers and mountain bikers and locals and not much more but the infrastructure is excellent.
We love Colorado for the landscape and its strong wild west vibes. This is a place where a cowboy hat would not look out of place. Unless you are a tourist, then you must not wear it of course.

We love this town and one reason is this cafe where you can get breakfast burritos and truly excellent coffee. If you ever visited the US you know how rare good coffee is in the country side. The cappuccino here is really great not only by American standards but in general. The burrito is fine too which means it fills your stomach effectively but it would not hurt if they would expand their breakfast menu. I can’t believe that I have just written that. I think I’m just spoiled.
As you can see the weather was excellent but when I took a little walk in the morning the temperature was close to zero degrees Celsius. It was even below zero the last time we had breakfast here five years ago.

This year we visited on the 17th of September, 11 days earlier than in 2018, which made a big difference regarding autumn colours or in short: just a couple of yellow leafs instead of awesome all yellow. So if you come to see autumn glory I think it is better to visit end of September to early October though I suspect that winter comes quick here.
Since we visited during the week I could finally take an image inside their bank before we left. Of course I politely asked and it seems they got this request rather often.
Silverton is a place I could imagine to spend a couple of days or even a week. Not for bike riding or hiking. The altitude is simply too high for me but in order to come down. I think this is the place to come down.
