Everybody talks about the Grand Canyon but in my opinion Bryce Canyon is more attractive especially if you hike one of its trails.
The Grand Canyon is impressive. When we visited on our first trip to the USA we spent a sunset and even more beautiful a sunrise there. Sunrise was special because we were practically alone. Bryce Canyon is much smaller but it is very picturesque and it’s easy accessible. You can just take images from one of the many viewpoints but the best thing is to go on one of the hikes.

The hikes are very easy. The trails always remind me on the movie “The Wizard of Oz”. You walk along a path that is almost totally smooth. The cobble stone plaster in the inner city of Vienna is a rougher terrain. So those trails are easy, smooth and wide but don’t underestimate the fact that you are in high altitude. Heat could be an issue too but not on that day. It was rather the opposite. It was cold and windy and I regretted that I left my hat in the car.
We have not planned for a hike. We just decided to go for walk on one of the viewpoints. That meant that I hiked with my full camera rucksack with all the lenses but no water. Luckily my wife never moves around with a small bottle of water so we could share it. She also had a spare headband in her bag that I happily accepted. When we visited the visitor center right after our hike I got myself a thick wool hat. But it was too late. I still caught a cold that day.

After lunch when we returned to our hotel it even started to rain. I have to mention this because rain is something that we hardly experienced during our trips in the South West. Rain and just 10 degrees Celsius, very unusual for early autumn. But despite the poor weather it was still beautiful. And very crowded. This is not the place if you want to be by yourself. The visitor center was so busy that we just grabbed a hat and a fridge magnet and moved on.
Bryce Canyon has become increasingly busy within the last couple of years. It felt different when we first came here in 2010 but I think it is still a must see. It is spectacular!
