Breakfast in America

At home our typical every day breakfast means bread with butter and jam and tea or coffee. Here it is different. We better do some hiking today.

And that was our plan. This is not our first visit of the Bryce Canyon but the first one where we allocate a whole day. From early morning to evening since we arrived the day before and booked our motel room for two days. A system that I can recommend when you plan to do more than visiting viewpoints to take a couple of pictures before you drive on.

Right after breakfast we drove to the parts of Bryce Canyon which are recommend for morning hours. It was beautiful and also not busy at all. That’s the advantage if you are already on location. You get up, have a breakfast and then you are right where you want to be when the light is still golden.

We didn’t see a lot of tourists but a group of landscape photographers. I saw those photo groups before. What really separates them from the tourists are the tripods. I guess you can’t join this landscape photography photo course without a tripod. It just wouldn’t feel right. This was my last trip where I brought a tripod and since I hardly used it at all it now stays at home.

I never ever took a tripod to my business trips to Asia of course but it was another thing to acknowledge that tripods don’t make any sense for me anymore when on vacation. Especially in the South West of the USA there is plenty of light, there are image stabilised lenses and excellent high ISO. So for me tripods are a thing of the past when traveling. I still like to see those groups of photographers with tripods though.

The morning was beautiful and the air was just magic. Very clean and fresh and it had just the perfect temperature. You could feel the high altitude. When we walked to the restaurant for breakfast it was close to 0 degrees Celsius but it got warm quickly.

This is what we did on previous trips. To drive around, stop at numerous view points and take a couple of images. This time it would be different. We planned to get lunch and then back to our motel for a little rest. Late afternoon when the light will be golden again we would go for a little hike.

Usually we prefer mid to late September for our USA trips but to be here in mid of June has its advantages too. Sure it’s crazy hot in the desert but the days are endless.
