House on the Hill

Museums are always a great place to visit. Some are famous for their exhibitions, some for the architecture but the special thing about the Getty Center is its location.

It’s located on the top of a hill. The car park is at the foot of the hill and you have to board a small train that gets you to the Center.

Like most modern museums it is so much more than just the art on display. The old museums like i.e. the National Gallery, the Louvre or the Kunsthistorisches Museum give the best paintings. A chance to see the main work of the most important painters. Of course such pieces are limited and very hard to get. Those paintings have been collected over hundreds of years mainly by the aristocracy. That’s why you can find those pieces of art are mainly in England, France, Italy or Austria.

A rather young museum in a rather young country has to be different. And the Getty Center is. But it’s not only location and architecture. There is some fine modern art on display here. And there is another big difference: The pieces of art get the room that they deserve. There are big rooms with only a couple of pieces on display. A big difference to most of the rooms in the KHM in Vienna where the paintings covering the walls all the way up to the high ceilings.

I guess that’s the reason why I like the Getty Center so much. There is a lot of empty space. There are many buildings and in between there are small cafes or just a couple of tables to relax. And of course the blue skies of Southern California plus the fact that I’m on vacation also helps to have a good time.

Even my wife was relaxed when I took her portrait with the 23/1.4. She struggled not to squint. Next time we need to bring our sunglasses.

Our second visit at the Getty Center but most likely not the last one. But it’s not my favourite museum in Los Angeles.

My favourite is the Petersen Automotive Museum Los Angeles. A car museum in the car city of the USA.
