Better Late Than Never

I have started to travel to South East Asia two years ago. Some places I have visited a couple of times but I have never been to Hongkong.

Now that has changed. What a place! But lets start with the arrival.

I arrived Sunday night and because something went wrong with the pick up from the hotel I needed to get a taxi. But first of all I needed some cash but the only cash machine beside the currency exchange didn’t work. Really? I changed my last 50.- EUROs to Hongkong Dollars and hoped it would be good enough for the taxi ride to the hotel.

When I found the taxi stand there were three different types. Or better three different colors of the same type of car. Green, blue and red. But there was an english speaking guide that helped me out. Mine were the red ones. There was also a referrer (if this is the correct word) that helped to find my hotel in a long list of hotels. She explained the location to my driver and after a short discussion in between them he stowed my luggage away and we “took off”.

Despite the guide book I had no clear picture of Hongkong but I expected high tech and everybody to speak English because it belonged to the British Empire for such a long time. I didn’t expect to sit in a 20 year old Toyota with a driver that doesn’t speak a single word of English.

The ride was long and I started to worry if the driver understood the hotel name and address correctly. But there was nothing to do for me than to hope and wait. Finally we arrived at the hotel. I took a snack and a beer at the restaurant, went upstairs, took a shower and went to sleep. I set my alarm for 7am. I wanted to stand up early to adjust to the new time fast. Next day it was foggy again.

I went downstairs for breakfast. I took a picture of the breakfast room but not of my breakfast. I can’t remember it so I assume it wasn’t anything special. Maybe an English breakfast but the next morning I ate fried noodles, dried fish and Dim Sum filled with Kimchi and had chicken feet and cooked stir fried spareribs for dinner.

I guess I arrived.
