See The Light

The first photo walk after my crash. I went to Vienna’s inner city with my “Asia”-gear: Fuji XP1 plus 14 and 35mm lens. When I go there I always have to enter the big cathedral. Despite all the tourists it is still a magic place.

I don’t know how often I have been there but it never looks the same. On a winters day it is dark and eerie inside. On a hot summers day it is cool and quiet. Sometimes there are special light installations inside. It’s always different but one thing is always the same: it is always awe-inspiring.

It is Vienna’s landmark and when the 136 meter South Tower was completed in the year 1433 it was the highest tower in Europe. No there were no higher skyscrapers in the USA at that time. There was no USA. America was unknown back then. It took 75 years to build the tower! Like all big cathedrals it is very impressive from the outside but to get the real experience you have to step inside.

This time there was a very nice light installation including white strings that looked like light rays. Combined with the bright sunlight it gives an amazing effect. Just beautiful! Take a look at the second shot.

I did not manage to update the firmware of my Fuji XP1 until I returned from Asia and I didn’t shoot a lot with the XP1 after my return so this was the first time I really enjoyed the improved Auto-ISO menu. Fuji finally included a minimum shutter speed setting to the menu. A small change for Fuji but I big step for my shooting experience.

I never understood why Fuji forgot about this simple detail. My X100 had this setting but the XP1 came without one. I ruined a couple of shots because of that or was forced to switch off Auto-ISO. But with the new firmware the XP1 finally became one of the best low light cameras on the planet. I’m looking forward to my next trip.
