Raindogs

Urban Dictionary: A rain Dog is a dog caught in the rain, with its whole trail washed away by the water so he can”t get back home. A stranded dog, who wants nothing better than to get home.

It’s used for people sleeping in doorways and it’s the title of an album by Tom Waits.

Some of the dogs here seems somehow lost to me. But I think not the dogs are lost but their owners. Poor souls – both.

It’s the second time I visited a big dog show. I don’t plan to get a dog. I would love to have one but I’m traveling to much. Maybe I get one when I retire.

I went to this dog show in 2007. With my brand new Canon 5D plus the 1.4/50mm. It was a great experience. Far superior low light capability to what I was used to from my Nikon DSLRs. What a camera. This time I originally planned to take my Canon 6D with the 35L and the Sigma 1.4/85 but switched to my Fuji XP1 plus the 1.4/35mm before I left the house. I did not regret my decision.

My XP1 plus the 1.4/35mm performed so much better than the 5D with the 1.4/50mm. Mainly because of the lens but also because sensor development haven’t stopped since 2005. The XP1 is about 2 stops better than my 5D was.

This fact plus the much better lens that can be used wide open without causing a significant loss in sharpness makes it simply the better combo. How about AF? Yes it is still a little slower but it is always spot on. Bokeh is better too.

Most of all the XP1 is much smaller and causes less concern. My main models ignored me and most of their masters too ( The lady in the shot above is an exception ). And that’s a good thing.

First: I like when the photographer disappear in the photos. Second: I did not like to get in any troubles with some of them. The guy two pictures above doesn’t look like somebody who’s biggest wish is a little chat with somebody that just took a picture of him. I could be wrong but I don’t think so. Loved his expression. Hope his dog manages to stay friendly.

Some dogs become like their owners or is it the other way around? Sometimes the dog seems to be a substitute. To be the fearless fighter or the princess or whatever his owner wishes to be. Or simply a substitute for kids. A dog is even better. It stays a kid for its entire life. But I can’t help to feel that some of these dogs feel somehow lost. Just like rain dogs.

What still amazes me is that they all no matter the style and size have one thing in common: the wolf! That’s something rather hard to imagine when looking at some of them. But I love them all. Wonderful animals!

I never liked 50mm lenses. I “grew up” with one but the biggest thing for me was when I finally got me first AF – SLR together with my first zoom lens. A 35-70 Nikkor. Loved the 35mm end of it and it never changed. 35mm seems to be one of the most flexible lenses to me.

Now I use primes more often but still find it difficult to use 50mm ( or 35mm on the Fuji ). It is almost like a short tele lens to me. You can not get close enough to be part of the scene.  The pictures always have this kind of distant viewer look I don’t like but it somehow worked for these shots.
