Lipstick Sunset

The end of summer is near. It was hot and sunny but something was missing – California.

The last four years we always traveled to the South West of the USA but not this year. As a consequence I miss the desert sun, the blue skies but most of all I miss the beach in California. And of course nothing compares to a sunset at the beach. All I can do is looking at some pictures I took last year.

The images were taken in Carpinteria. A small town close to Santa Barbara. Very laid back and quiet. I think that’s the reason why this is our favourite place. Sometimes it feels like we are the only tourists like on this beautiful evening.

My wife was relaxed enough to play the model. Just in case that you wonder about the clothing. We just returned from Palm Springs where the temperature was 46 degrees Celsius. A couple of days earlier we stayed in Death Valley where we had even 53 degrees. So the nice cool breeze at the beach felt chilly in comparison.

The year before I shot the fantastic Canon 70-200/2.8 II on a full frame body but this year it was the much slower 55-200 OIS on my Fuji X Pro-2. So what have I missed? For sure I have not missed the weight of the Canon. But beside that? To be honest not much. If the background is very nice like in this specific case there is no need to blur it away. It’s great to see more of the beach, the other walkers or the trees.

And the dynamic range of the X Pro-2 is just excellent. Much better than on the Canon. With my Canon it was always a little tricky to shoot against the sun. With the Fuji it’s a breeze. I could have revealed the shadows even more in images above but I always prefer a more natural look.

Talking about the look. I used VSCO’s Velvia preset here which gets very close to the real thing. I love those colours.

What a beautiful walk on the beach! Again. This place never disappoints. I wonder how it feels to have a house on the beach here. I’m very fortunate. I live in a beautiful house just outside of one of the most beautiful cities in the world but I guess I would make a trade.

So if you own a beach house here and if you are willing to move to Austria just let me know.
